A short history: Saint Patrick's Day is an Irish celebration which stems from the story of an Irish missionary named Patrick who was kidnapped at age 16 It is said that while he was held captive and forced to work as a shepherd, he 'found God.' After escaping from his kidnappers, he decided to try and convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. He died on March 17th, and this became the day to celebrate his life.
Modern day celebrations: Most people who celebrate this holiday don't even know that story. Most people celebrate a loud, musical, fun, beer-drinking, green-wearing folk holiday. Until recently, I didn't know that story and it's not the reason I celebrate this fun holiday!
